About Us

Hearty German fare for your Guten Appetit!

On April 1, 1974, Eckhard and Bruni Thalwitz opened the Bavarian Chef on Route 29 in Madison, Virginia. The Bavarian Chef quickly became a local favorite, renowned for its tasty fare and warm hospitality. Generous portions, family-style side dishes and mouth-watering desserts are the hallmark of a hearty meal at The Bavarian Chef. Today, chef/owner Jerome Thalwitz continues his parents’ tradition of excellence.

In May 2010, Jerome and Christine Thalwitz opened a second location in the historic train station in downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia. In a setting reminiscent of the many lovely bahnhof restaurants in Germany, diners delight in hearing the occasional train rumble past on the elevated tracks.

Known throughout the United States, and even internationally, for its inspired cuisine and gemütlichkeit, or cheery conviviality, The Bavarian Chef restaurants have garnered acclaim from magazines such as Bon Appetit and continue to be featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Virginian-Pilot as a top-rated German restaurant. The Bavarian Chef Fredericksburg was recently featured as one of the Best New Restaurants of 2011 and as one of the 50 Best Restaurants by Northern Virginia Magazine.
