On April 1, 1974, Eckhard and Bruni Thalwitz opened the Bavarian Chef on Route 29 in Madison, Virginia. The Bavarian Chef quickly became a local favorite, renowned for its outstanding food and warm hospitality. Generous portions, family-style sides and mouthwatering desserts are the hallmark of a hearty meal at The Bavarian Chef. Today, chef/owner Jerome Thalwitz and his team continue his parents’ tradition of excellence.
Known throughout the United States, and even internationally, for its inspired cuisine, friendly service and gemütlich atmosphere, The Bavarian Chef has garnered acclaim from magazines such as Bon Appetit, and it continues to be featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Virginian-Pilot as a top-rated German restaurant. In May 2010, Jerome and his wife Christine opened The Bavarian Chef Fredericksburg in the historic train station of Old Town Fredericksburg. They sold the Fredericksburg restaurant in May 2019. Jerome and Christine launched The Bavarian Chef food truck and catering company in 2013. Look for us at festivals, wineries and breweries, and weddings!
Whether you visit us in Madison, at the food truck, or at a special event, we appreciate the opportunity to serve you.
